September 2008 Special Focuses were:
Playing Gender
and
Mastering the Blade

We spent one full weekend in September:
Saturday, September 13:
Playing Gender, led by BWB founder Dawn Alden
St. Peters
(621 W. Belmont, Chicago)
How do we instantly know a man is a man, or a woman is a woman? This day-long workshop will investigate the conscious and unconscious ways that men and women proclaim their gender in everyday interactions. Participants will then manipulate these subtle, non-verbal communications to adopt the "gender cues" of the opposite gender. The emphasis is not on how to "pass," but rather how to capture and portray the essence of masculine or feminine, in preparation for playing cross-gender roles.
Sunday, September 14:
Swords for Rusty Broads (and Gents): Mastering the Blade
featuring:
"Coming to grips with the sword"
An intensive exploration of the halbschwert (half-sword) style of fighting with the
medieval hand-and-a-half sword, applied to stage weaponry.
