SUBMIT YOUR ART!

REQUIREMENTS for Inspiring Sword & Pen 2010:

  • Only PHOTOGRAPHIC submissions will be accepted, to protect your original work (the winner may later choose to ship the original piece for display and potential sale).
    • Digital submissions must be under 2MB (if we need to see the image in greater detail, we may request a higher-resolution file), and may be emailed to swordandpen@babeswithblades.org
    • Printed submissions must be under 36" x 48". The sender must pay any and all shipping fees associated with sending printed material (including return shipping if desired - we will not return-ship without prepaid postage), and may ship to: Babes With Blades, c/o MSCI; 5061 N Pulaski, Suite 204; Chicago, IL 60630

IMPORTANT: This will be a BLIND SUBMISSION PROCESS - therefore the file containing the graphic art should not contain any reference to the producing artist, no names, signatures, or contact information of ANY kind. Please submit all of your pertinent personal information in the body of the email, or on an easily separable medium, if your submission is mailed. The winning artist’s identity will only be revealed once a selection has been made.

U.S. and international, male and female artists’ submissions are accepted.

If you wish to submit created art:

  • All submissions must be within the artist's power to surrender rights to the submission.
  • We require that the work being submitted NOT be submitted elsewhere for the duration of the competition.

If you wish to submit "found" art:

  • We will ONLY accept images of artworks (when not created by the submitter) that are already in the public domain.
  • You must include the title and location of the source, and be able to produce verification that you took the picture of the artwork that you are sending. If we have any doubts as to the origin of the image, we will not consider it.
  • If there are any duplicates, where more than one person submits a photo of a public-domain work, the first-received photo will be considered the only entry of that image.

The original incarnation of works submitted will be considered the original creations of the creators, not as Works for Hire. The artist will retain all copyright rights and privileges granted thereto.

Babes With Blades retains all rights to the photographic representation of works submitted, including the irrevocable and unrestricted right to use, reproduce, and publish said photographs for editorial, trade, advertising, or any other purpose and in any manner or medium; to alter the same without restriction; and to copyright the same.

If no entry seems sufficiently evocative of story, we may elect not to choose a winning entry this year.

Submissions MUST be received by July 31, 2010, whether via email or post.

The mission, members, past productions and interests of Babes With Blades.

  • We are an all-female, stage combat-oriented theatre company, and as such are looking for images that depict or evoke physical conflict between women.
  • We typically perform in small, black box theatres – and the laws of physics do apply to us! Small casts & simple settings will be favored, and any hi-tech hijinx depicted will need to be reproducible on stage (that said, keep in mind that theatre is capable of wondrous flights of fancy and illusion… we have yet, however, to see convincing lightsabers in a live venue).
  • Have a look at this page, which features the images used in prior competitions and some key words we consider vital in our mission.

We are looking for art that will inspire writers, and be appropriate for this theatre company. Story and character are important. Sensationalism is not.
