Our Joining Sword & Pen playwriting competition offers writers from around the globe the opportunity to take inspiration from a work of visual art, using it as a basis for a brand new work for theatre that features strong roles for women, and explores violence as a storytelling tool.
Over the past three rounds of JS&P, we’ve used already-created works of art as our inspirational images.
This time, we've decided to put matters into YOUR hands, with our first ever competition for visual artists.
Help us inspire future works of theatre!
We are looking for images that might inspire a story; launching points for writers' imaginations. The piece of art may be a painting, photo, sculpture, mural, mosaic, etc., but it must be visual art, and must conform to the specifications listed on the submission requirements page in order to be considered (link below).
Submissions must be received by July 31, 2010. EXTENSION!!! You have until August 8 to get them in!
The winner will be announced Thursday, September 2, 2010 as part of a post-show speech following that night's performance of "The Last Daughter of Oedipus" by Jennifer L. Mickelson.
The winning entry will be used to inspire the next Joining Sword & Pen Competition.
The winning entrant will receive a gala gallery evening with unveiling of their submission and will be given the opportunity to display, and possibly sell, some of their art in the lobby of the production of the winning script of JS&P 2011-12.
